The ship is the Jeankey, built in 1829. It was Belgium's first transatlantic ship to sail to America with cargo, mail and emigrants.
Weyts was a painter of ship portraits in back-glass technique. The National Maritime Museum in Antwerp and Kunstmuseum aan Zee in Ostend have works by Weyts in their collections.
