Sella Stool

The object was designed as a ‘telephone stool’ for unusual postures and occasional sitting. Besides its clear reference to the world of bicycle races (its colour reminds of the pink jersey worn by the winner of the Giro d’Italia), it recalls the milker’s stool.

The inspiration was a new behavior, the designer said: “When I use a pay phone (…) I like to move around, but I also would like to sit, but not completely” a deeper and more meaningful consequence of an object’s combined form and function. Everyday objects’ observation was often the starting point for his designs: “Design demands observation” was one of his mottoes.

Back then the stool was judged to be too radical. The stool's elegance seems almost bizarre when you realize that the seat is a traditional bicycle racing saddle. Placed on a pink lacquered steel bar and ending in a robust cast iron pedestal the result is a composition which almost magically creates a highly coherent and noble object. Together with the Mezzadro Stool, whose seat the Castiglioni brothers converted from a tractor seat, Sella is considered to be one of the most extreme designs by the creative pair. With Sella the brothers demonstrate their flair for converting everyday objects into original designs.  

The height is adjustable (71 to 90 cm).
